Look 1
These tutorials are from a recent commercial editorial shoot with Shay for the clothing label Essua. Peter only uses 1 light and is able to get 4 completely different looks by changing the placement of the light! This is followed by a tutorial showing how to cull photos down to a 20 image selection and retouching.

Totally brilliant!….I’m eating this up!
Before you started dragging the shutter, how are you and the . model able to move and work so quickly and still her in excellent focus?
f8 helps but I have been shooting fashion for over 15 years and with practice focusing becomes easy, just learning were to focus on the model so the camera doesn’t hunt helps heaps.
What was the name of that motion technique again?
Hi Eric, the name of the technique is ‘dragging the shutter’. Basically you just need a good quality flash light, the flash freezes the model, and you need to have the shutter stay open longer than the flash duration. Then either make the model move or move the camera
Absolutely LOVE this!!! Would you recommend shooting this around f8? I normally shoot shallow around 1.8 – 2.2 (for boudoir) but thinking that wouldn’t work for this? I need to get a light to try!! Actually do you think a Canon speed light flash would work or need something more serious?? Thanks Peter!
Thanks heaps. Depth of field is your own personal taste, I prefer to shoot around f8 for the fashion feel. And if the Cannon flash is all you own, just try it, you should be able to recreate it 🙂
maestro excelente como aprendo usted el maestro de la luz es decir de la fotografía en general.’UN APREGUNTA VEO QUE NO USA ESAS POSES RÍGIDAS VEO QUE HAY CAMBIOS RÁPIDO DE POSES ¿ ES NECESARIO SABER DE POSES PARA INDICARLE A LA MODELO, PORQUE ESO ES MI DIFICULTA APARTE QUE ME GUSTA COMO USTED LO HACE GRACIAS
No poso las modelos
Your subject looks to be an essential part, in-order to obtain this photographic effect, (lighting + reflective hair color, quick moves, etc.). Foremost element, is having you behind the camera. (Opinion only). Double ghosted face shots are visually captivating. Simply put: Wow!
Thanks heaps James, Shay is awesome to work with, she moves perfectly to get these type of shots
