Contrasting & Power Of Light
In this tutorial Peter break downs the basic fundamentals of how he see’s and understands light. He explains and shows how changing the model and camera around creates the amount of contrast in the look you are after.

Awesome tutorial, Peter. I find myself falling back to one light all the time as my studio is just so small, lol. But also get great lighting, are at least try to.
Thanks for sharing
Hi Peter … great tuturial as always.
Found the same effects C1 vs LR last year. LR is everything I need at the moment.
I noticed that it is not possible to swith the video into “full screen” anymore. Any particular reason?
Kind regards 🙂
Sorry Helmut the full screen issue was with our video host but they have restored the button and it is working again
no problem Peter and thanks for the “fix” 🙂
Hello Peter,
thanks for presenting this interesting topic. I noticed that this video does not allow to watch it full-screen as the icon is not shown. Is this intentional?
Best, Stefan
Not sure whats going on but short term click on picture in picture then stretch it out, we will get IT to look at it tomorrow
Thanks, Peter
No worries Stefan, the full size button has been restored again, sorry about that
Thank you so much 🙂
In Firefox, I was able to get it to full screen by right clicking on the image and selecting “Show only this frame”.
Thanks Keith, the button has been restored now
For some reason it won’t let me open the full screen and the screen resize button is now missing
Sorry about this, was an issue with video host and has now been fixed
the hair trick is so amazing and Meikas look turned so much with the messy hair. Love it! And i laught my ass off when Meika tried to touch her hair after make it messy and you told “ah ah dont!” 🙂
Great Video Peter
Thanks heaps Martin, I use the hair trick a lot, especially with models that are a bit more prim and proper like Meika
It’s crazy how much messy hair can take things up another level. And it’s even crazier how badly most models just have to struggle not to touch their messy hair..lol. Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge!
I love messy hair 🙂 most models struggle to not touch it after I make them mess it up. Thanks heaps, glad you enjoyed it
Peter, I use Capture One to teether and edit in ACR and Photoshop vs. editing in Capture One…
Now that Lightroom has fixed the tethering with Leica I’m not using Capture One at all
Hello Peter,
How are you?
Thanks for another inspiring tutorial.
Thanks so much Yves
I just found out how to work with the leica SL & LR. But I’m a windows user. And I was pretty surprised how good it works. Until now I worked for tethering with C1 and later when editing I went to ACR .
If only Lightroom could fix their highlight alert it would be perfect
The pic you were discussing – it just looks so digital – I see what you’re saying. I’m guessing the folks who make that software think that it differentiates them and is a “look” for them. But I agree, its a no-go
Unfortunately, camera companies and software companies are pushing this over sharpens computer/AI look, and I much prefer the natural, not retouched look, even though certain models and clients want that over touch look
Peter,
Thank you for the lesson using one light. I am going to shelve my other lights till I have mastered the one light!
Yes once you master 1 light you don’t nee d 2 lights
That tutorial came at the perfect time when I had my first studio shoot ever and it was helpful very very helpful thx for this genius video
Hi Peter, that was a really good video that clearly explains how the position of the light affects the image. I’ve never seen it like that before. Well done. Can you make a video where the umbrella is looking down on the model from above. I know you’ve done videos on this before, but they didn’t show the relationships as well as this video. I also have the problem with the ceiling height, are there any tricks?
Thanks Steffen, I’m glad you enjoyed this. I have a really old tutorial with an octabox looking down on the model https://inspire.peter-coulson.com.au/workshops/lighting/studio-techniques/octabox and the umbrella with a sock or octabox are going to give an almost identical result
