Phocus vs Lightroom vs Capture One
This video is Peter comparing Leica and Hasselblad RAW files in Phocus, Lightroom and Capture One and seeing if he is able to get the same look out of each program.

Hi Peter! I have started using a radial gradient in Adobe Camera Raw since I heard you mention doing that to soften the face a little. I have been erasing the mask from the eyes and lips though. I noticed you didn’t do that. Do you just find it’s not necessary because you are reducing the sharpness so little? Thanks as always for sharing your skills with us! Rob
I’m softerning the whole face to make it feel less digital and more real
Hi Peter.. Great comparison!!! In LR, shortcut to zoom in and out ” CMD and + key (Mac)” to zoom out. “CMD and – key (Mac)” it works while you have the Radial Gradient going also.
On your Hassy in LR when you brought your Blue channel Lut in… Did it take RaRa’s Big blue eyes a lot lighter than in Phocus? see you Eatonton if a spot opens up..
Chris
Yes blue channel will make blue eyes lighter, I can use the blue luminosity slider in Lightroom to do the same thing
Hey, Peter. Regarding taking some of the sharpening off in LR, have you tried moving the texture slider down just a bit?
Yes but I feel sometimes it makes the skim a bit muddy
I have a bit of a nit to pick with this comparison. Ultimately each editor does better with some file formats than others. It should be no surprise that Adobe, which developed and publishes the DNG standard, handles DNGs better than other editors. I use it exclusively for my Leica Q-P images and get similar results to yours with Capture One. But Lightroom famously butchers Fuji RAFs (particularly from X-Trans cams) while the Fuji-Capture One partnership ensures great results in C1 . I find I have to do very little with my Nikon files as well in Capture One compared to Lightroom, There will be nuances in how each image processor handles different manufacturer’s proprietary formats. With that in mind, I would personally rather have this focus more on using your years of experience to highlights different ways to compare editors rather than declaring any preference based on one or two file types.
Looking forward to more content. Thanks for keeping the videos coming and the inspiration in front of me.
All the videos I post on inspire, it’s not me telling you what you should do. It’s showing you what I do, so I can make decisions for what’s best for me and showing what is the best gear and software that suits me and my look. I’m not telling anyone not to use capture one I’m just explaining to people why I don’t use it because I cannot get my look, I have been consistently trying for four years to get my look and just cannot get the look I want. That saying this does not mean other people can’t use capture one because they might be able to get there look and that is fine.
Hi Peter i think you can bring in the blue channel in C1 as ICC profil(Camera Profil). You have to save your Lut in PS in icc profil.

If you make the sliders bigger in C1 it is much better to control, it is even better then lightroom. You con make the hole section bigger with the double arrows.
I do not use the contrast slider in C1. In c1 it is better to use levels. Sometimes i decrease contrast with the contrast slider and use levels to bring back the contrast to my taste. I think you should play with the levels and find out how it works. Its different to PS dry to move the topend.
Hi Steffen
Thanks for the link but Capture still feels to digital for my look. I’m not telling anyone not to use capture one I’m just explaining to people why I don’t use it because I cannot get my look, I have been consistently trying for four years to get my look and just cannot get the look I want. That saying this does not mean other people can’t use capture one because they might be able to get there look and that is fine.
Hi Peter (and Bec)!
Is there a way to do your B&W channel conversions in Photoshop?
Yes I use the channel mixer for red, green and blue filters, we also have a tutorial on this https://inspire.peter-coulson.com.au/workshops/retouching/introduction-to-photoshop/converting-to-black-and-white
I’ve created some Capture One styles that emulate the LUTs you have created Peter. Red Channel and Green Channel were easy to create. The Blue Channel was more of a challenge. See what you think of the results.

Thanks I will give this a try
