Submitting To Magazines

We received a comment here on Inspire asking us to talk about the process of submitting to magazines as we have been doing a few submissions lately, so in this chat Peter and I talk about the different scenarios and different types of magazines to help you if you are considering submitting your work.

Definitely a worthwhile video. I’ve had quite a few images published in those “print on demand” magazines that everyone scrambles to get into on Instagram. I have fortunately never paid to do so, but in the end all it’s amounting to is doing what I do for free so that someone else can maybe make money off of my work. I could just as easily start my own equivalent magazine and self-publish, no one would be the wiser, and if I happened to make any sales, then I would get that money. But it was enough that I could claim to be a “published photographer” for whoever attention that gets me (which is none). I hope to one day step up to being published in a “real” magazine, so thank you for the insights.

My models and I have been submitting to a few vanity magazines in the past, especially this year, which was a bit wild. It’s a lovely opportunity, especially for the models, to showcase their work. It’s a nice confidence boost, particularly in the beginning. I don’t see any problems with it, and paying a few bucks to get a printed copy is a nice thing. Funnily enough, getting into the print issue, or better yet, on the cover, is mostly free and makes it easier to also get featured on their social media platforms. Most of that then costs money. But, unlike many of you, I shoot purely for the passion of it, and I have my day job to pay the bills.
